Sciatica is a common complaint for runners but we see this throughout our patient population.
The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs through your hips and down your leg.
What causes sciatica?
There can be several causes but a very common one is a muscle in the hips called the piriformis that can become tight and overworked which can then impinge the sciatic nerve. This can be due to compensation patterns and overuse but there are many ways to help with this pain.
You may be dealing with sciatica if you are experiencing:
- Burning pain that runs down the back of the leg.
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Muscle weakness
What can the chiropractor do for sciatica?
The most important aspect of care is the assessment to make sure that this is what we're dealing with so that we can tailor your care plan. Typically the SI joint or lower back may have joint restrictions that we can take care of with chiropractic adjustments and/or mobilizations. After taking care of this, we will perform one of our many soft tissue therapies to deal with the tight muscles putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. We then follow up with home rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the weak muscles and stretch out the tight muscles.
